South Sudan pile more misery on Lionesses at AfroBasket qualifiers

Kenya’s Lionesses endured a second straight defeat at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 Zone 5 Pre-Qualifiers, falling 86-69 to South Sudan. With their qualification hopes in jeopardy, they face an uphill battle in their remaining matches.

Kenya’s national women’s basketball team, the Lionesses, suffered their second consecutive defeat at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 Zone 5 Pre-Qualifiers, falling 86-69 to South Sudan on Tuesday, 4 February 2025.

The Lionesses had already endured a tough start, losing 75-56 to Uganda in their opening group-stage match. Despite a promising first quarter against South Sudan, where they edged a 19-14 lead, Kenya struggled to maintain momentum. Under head coach George Mayienga, the team lost grip as South Sudan took control of the remaining quarters.

South Sudan overturned Kenya’s early advantage with a dominant 21-11 second quarter, heading into halftime with a 38-30 lead. The trend continued, with South Sudan winning the third quarter 23-15 before sealing their victory with a 25-24 fourth quarter.

The Lionesses are in a tough group alongside hosts Egypt, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan. With their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, Kenya must rally in their upcoming fixtures to keep their AfroBasket 2025 dreams alive.

The Zone 5 Pre-Qualifiers, which began on 3 February at the Hassan Mostafa Arena in Giza, Egypt, will run until 8 February. Six teams; Egypt, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda are battling for a coveted spot at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 in Côte d’Ivoire.
