Kenya Morans fall short in 2025 AfroBasket qualification

Kenya Morans’ bid for a spot at the 2025 AfroBasket ended in disappointment after a 57-44 loss to Guinea in their final Group E qualifier in Tripoli. Struggling with inefficiency in attack, Morans failed to capitalise on key moments, allowing Guinea to secure the last qualification slot alongside Tunisia and Angola.

Kenya Morans’ hopes of securing a place at the 2025 AfroBasket came to an end on Sunday after a 57-44 loss to Guinea in Tripoli, Libya. The defeat saw Kenya miss out on a fifth appearance at the continental showpiece, set to take place in Angola this August.

Needing a win to secure qualification, Morans struggled with inefficiency in attack, failing to capitalise on crucial moments. Guinea, who had lost to Kenya in the earlier phase of qualifiers, showed improvement, having edged Angola 66-65 before narrowly losing 64-63 to Tunisia in the final round of games.

Kenya’s campaign was further hampered by logistical setbacks, including a forfeit loss to Tunisia before falling 88-59 to Angola on Saturday.

Against Guinea, Kenya got off to a slow start, trailing 15-8 after the first quarter. A brief resurgence in the second quarter brought them within nine points at halftime (31-21), but their offensive struggles persisted. Despite a spirited fightback in the third quarter, Guinea maintained control, holding a 45-38 lead heading into the final period. Two decisive three-pointers early in the fourth quarter sealed Kenya’s fate as their scoring drought continued.

Tylor Ongwae led Kenya’s efforts with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and one assist. Blacio Owili added eight points and eight rebounds, while Eugene Adera contributed six points and seven rebounds. However, no other Kenyan player managed double-digit points in what was the team’s lowest-scoring game of the qualifiers.

With the loss, Guinea joins Tunisia and Angola as the three teams from Group E advancing to the 2025 AfroBasket. Meanwhile, Kenya will have to wait for another cycle to return to the continental stage.
