Gabon coach satisfied, McCarthy optimistic despite Kenya’s defeat

Gabon edged Kenya 2-1 in a crucial international qualifier, but the result told only part of the story. While Gabon coach Mouyoma Thierry admitted his side was fortunate to win, Kenya’s Benni McCarthy remained upbeat, promising to build a team Kenyans can be proud of.

Gabon edged Kenya 2-1 in a crucial international qualifier at Nyayo Stadium, marking their first-ever away victory against the Harambee Stars. Despite the result, both coaches shared their perspectives on the match, with Gabon’s Mouyoma Thierry expressing satisfaction and Kenya’s Benni McCarthy remaining optimistic about the future.

Gabon coach Mouyoma Thierry acknowledged the tough environment his team faced but credited his players for their resilience.

“By the time we were leaving the hotel, the stadium was already full, and we knew it was going to be a difficult game. We had planned to win the game or at worst get a draw, and therefore I am satisfied with the result today. We struggled after going 2-0 up, and it is unfortunate Kenya pulled one back. We were lucky to win, and I must congratulate the players for holding it down with humility,” Thierry said.

Gabon’s victory extended their qualification tally to 15 points, putting them in a strong position to advance.

McCarthy - We will build a team Kenyans can be proud of

Kenya’s head coach Benni McCarthy was full of praise for his players despite the loss, highlighting the challenges they faced in preparation.

“We didn’t win, but I must say I am very proud of the players. They did their best. We had a short time to put a team together, and I think they did their best under very difficult circumstances, with a short recovery period. It was not the result we hoped for, but we have five more games to go, and we will keep fighting—you just never know what will happen,” McCarthy stated.

He also assured Kenyan fans of long-term progress, with upcoming tournaments in mind.

“What I want to promise Kenyans is that we will build a team they will be proud of. With CHAN set for August and AFCON in 2027, I am excited and looking forward to building a good team. I thank all Kenyans who filled the stadium; they made us really feel nice to play at home, and I urge them to keep coming to support us.”

Kenya started brightly, showing attacking intent early on, with Michael Olunga posing a constant threat. However, Gabon struck first in the 15th minute through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who calmly slotted past Ian Otieno after receiving a precise pass from Kanga Kuku.

Kenya thought they had equalised three minutes later, but Olunga’s goal was ruled out for offside. The Harambee Stars created several chances but trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Gabon doubled their lead in the second half when Aubameyang converted from the penalty spot following a handball by Eric Ouma. Kenya fought back and pulled one goal back in the 63rd minute when Mohammed Bajaber set up Ouma, who delivered an assist for Olunga to tap in.

Despite late pressure and six minutes of added time, Kenya could not find an equaliser as Gabon secured a vital win.

With five matches remaining, McCarthy and his team will need to regroup and find consistency to keep their qualification hopes alive.
