2025 CAVB Men’s Championships: GSU extend streak, KPA bounce back, Prisons falter again

Kenya’s GSU kept their hopes of a historic continental title alive with another dramatic comeback at the CAVB Men’s Club Championships, while KPA bounced back strongly and Kenya Prisons continued to struggle in Libya.
GSU continued their fine run at the 2025 CAVB Men’s Club Championships in Libya, rallying from a set down to edge Nemo Stars of Uganda 3-2 (26-28, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 15-7) on Wednesday.
The result solidified GSU’s reputation as the tournament’s comeback specialists. They had already overturned early deficits in their previous matches to beat Algeria’s Club Castel 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22) and Morocco’s FUS Rabat 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 16-14).
The win took GSU to second place in Pool B with 10 points, two behind table-toppers and record 16-time champions Al Ahly of Egypt, who sit on 12 points.

GSU will now face Al Ahly in their final group match on Thursday - an encounter that could define their ambitions of lifting a first-ever continental title. Al Ahly have dominated the tournament so far, registering straight-sets wins against Genie Republique (DR Congo), FUS Rabat, and Nemo Stars, before conceding their only set in a 3-1 win over Club Castel (25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20) on Wednesday.
A victory over the Egyptian giants would mark a major statement from the Kenyans ahead of the knockout rounds.
Meanwhile, in Group C, former bronze medallists Kenya Prisons continued to struggle, slumping to a second consecutive five-set defeat. On Tuesday, they lost 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15) to Mauritius’ Orange Club, and on Wednesday, fell again in similar fashion to Kepler of Rwanda (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 9-15).
In both matches, Prisons started strong but failed to hold on after the opening set, and now find themselves in fifth place with five points in their six-team group. They must beat hosts El Etihad—who lead the group with 12 points from four straight wins - on Thursday to stand a chance of progressing to the knockout stages. Only the top four teams from each group will advance, with the rest headed for classification matches.
In Group D, KPA put themselves back on track with a convincing 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21) win over Emmanuel of DR Congo on Wednesday. The Dockers had lost their previous match in straight sets (17-25, 12-25, 19-25) to ES Tunis of Tunisia on Tuesday but showed no signs of that setback affecting their rhythm.
KPA now sit third in the group with seven points and need just a single point against Litto of Cameroon on Thursday to confirm their spot in the round of 16. Litto are currently fifth with four points.
