KCB sink Tusker 2-0 as Omondi shines in SportPesa Premier League kick-off

The result gives KCB a perfect start to the new campaign, while Tusker will be left to rue missed chances, including Kapaito’s costly penalty miss
New signing Boniface Omondi struck twice as KCB kicked off the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Tusker FC at Kasarani Main Stadium on Friday evening.
Tusker started brightly, with Ian Simiyu making an early run in the sixth minute but losing possession before KCB’s Kelvin Etemesi fired wide at the other end. Tusker kept probing, with chances for Charles Saamu and Alex Onchwari, but they failed to trouble goalkeeper Bonphas Munyasa, who stood firm between the posts for the bankers.

Against the run of play, KCB broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Former Gor Mahia forward Omondi latched onto a clever pass to slot home past Tusker keeper Joseph Ochuka, giving Robert Matano’s men the lead. Moments later, Omondi almost doubled his tally but was denied by a strong Tusker backline led by captain Charles Momanyi.
Tusker sought a response, with Denis Iguma trying from a free kick that was cleared by KCB skipper Humphrey Mieno. Onchwari then pounced on a rebound from a punched clearance by Munyasa, but his effort was cleared off the line before Simiyu Ian blasted over from close range.
As Tusker wasted chances, KCB doubled their lead just before halftime. Once again, it was Omondi who finished calmly in the 45th minute to send KCB into the break with a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Tusker pushed hard after the restart and earned a penalty in the 70th minute after a handball inside the box. Striker Eric Kapaito stepped up but blasted his effort high, summing up the Tuskers’ frustrating evening.
Matano responded with changes, introducing Stephen Etyang and Jack Onganya for KCB, while Tusker brought on Thomas Omole for Cliff Oruko and later gave game time to youngster David Polepole.
Despite the substitutions, Tusker failed to capitalise on their pressure, with Munyasa pulling off a superb one-on-one save to deny Momanyi late on.
KCB’s defence, marshalled by Mieno and Clyde Senaji, who was earlier booked, held firm as the bankers sealed their third consecutive season opener with a clean sheet.
