Mathare United stun Kakamega Homeboyz as Bandari upset Sofapaka

In the 53rd minute, John Nyawir drove down the left flank and whipped in a dangerous cross that Kakamega Homeboyz defender Eugene Okoth inadvertently steered into his own net to give the hosts the lead.

The SportPesa Premier League served up a dramatic shift in momentum on Saturday, with Mathare United producing their best performance of the season to defeat Kakamega Homeboyz 2–0 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

After a balanced and high-tempo opening half in which both sides traded chances, Rodgers Ouma striking the post for Homeboyz and Kimari sending a powerful effort over for Mathare, the breakthrough arrived shortly after the restart.

In the 53rd minute, John Nyawir drove down the left flank and whipped in a dangerous cross that Kakamega Homeboyz defender Eugene Okoth inadvertently steered into his own net to give the hosts the lead.

The goal gave Mathare renewed confidence and they doubled the advantage twelve minutes later, Masika and Nyawir combining neatly once again before the latter delivered another inviting cross that Daniel Ange headed in for his first goal of the season.

Mathare continued to threaten through Kinyanjui and Ouru as they pushed for a third, while Homeboyz, despite introducing fresh legs, struggled to create clear chances against a well-organised Mathare backline.

The result dents Homeboyz’s hopes of moving top of the table and provides Mathare with a timely lift after a difficult run of results.

Earlier at the Kasarani Annex, Posta Rangers and Mara Sugar FC battled to a 1–1 draw in a contest that mirrored the intensity of their previous meetings.

Mara Sugar struck first in the opening half when Brian Otieno finished confidently to put the visitors ahead. Posta, who have endured a frustrating run in front of goal, showed greater urgency after the break and were rewarded when Drona Openda converted from the penalty spot to restore parity.

Despite late pressure from both sides, neither could find a decisive moment, leaving Posta winless in five matches and Mara Sugar maintaining their impressive consistency on the road.

In Mombasa, Bandari finally found their rhythm with a 2–0 victory over Sofapaka at the Mbaraki Sports Club, thanks to a brilliant brace from young forward Erisat Orute.

The attacker struck in each half, delivering a composed and influential performance that lifted Bandari to their second win of the campaign.

Sofapaka, who had arrived in good form, were unable to match Bandari’s intensity and struggled to recover after conceding early, allowing the hosts to control the pace and secure a deserved win. The result eases pressure on coach Mohamed Borji, whose side had endured a difficult start to the season.
