Full competition lineup unveiled for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

The Games will open on Friday, July 14 and close on Sunday, July 30, making them the largest in Olympic history, with 36 sports across 51 disciplines held at 49 venues in 18 locations across Los Angeles and Oklahoma City

The organisers of the 2028 Los Angeles (LA) Olympics have unveiled the full schedule for all medal events, allowing athletes and fans to see exactly when and where each competition will take place.

The Games will open on Friday, July 14 and close on Sunday, July 30, making them the largest in Olympic history, with 36 sports across 51 disciplines held at 49 venues in 18 locations across Los Angeles and Oklahoma City

The Games will begin with the women's triathlon in Venice Beach, returning to its traditional first-medal slot last seen at the 2000 Games in Sydney.

Athletics and swimming have swapped their usual order, with the men's and women's 100m finals taking place in the opening two days and swimming now scheduled to conclude the Games.

According to organisers, half of all athlete slots will go to women, and every team sport will include an equal or greater number of women's teams compared to men's.

Day 1 will feature the most women's finals ever held on a single Olympic day, including triathlon, athletics, judo, fencing, kayaking, rugby sevens and shooting competitions.

Day 15, known as "Super Saturday", is set to be the busiest of the Games.

Fans can expect 26 finals across 23 sports, including both team and individual events such as athletics (marathon), basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, cycling, equestrian, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rhythmic gymnastics, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, wrestling and weightlifting.

Baseball and softball are also set to return to the Olympics after last appearing at the Tokyo 2020 Games.

"Marking another change from Paris 2024, baseball and softball will make their return to the Olympic programme, after last appearing in Tokyo 2020, with gold medal games on Day 5 and Day 15, respectively," said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in a statement.

"The baseball tournament will begin on Day 1, prior to the opening ceremony, with a new competition window designed to facilitate MLB players to participate in the Olympic tournament."

Cricket will also make its Olympic comeback for the first time in more than 100 years, with the women's tournament concluding on Day 6 and the men's tournament wrapping up on Day 15.

Additionally, lacrosse will return to the Olympic programme after decades, having last appeared as a full medal sport in 1908 and later as a demonstration in 1928, 1932 and 1948. Both the men's and women's team champions will be decided on Day 15.

The 2028 Games will also introduce new sports, including flag football and squash, as well as six mixed-gender team events in archery, athletics, artistic gymnastics, rowing, golf and table tennis.

According to organisers, the schedule may be adjusted as needed, leading up to and during the LA28 Games.

"With Olympic ticket registration opening in January of 2026, now is the time to start planning what events you want to attend, which sports are coming to your neighbourhood and the moments of history you don't want to miss," said LA28 Chief Executive Officer Reynold Hoover on Wednesday.

"Athletes and fans from around the world now have what they need to plan an unforgettable Olympic experience."
