Malkia Strikers faces tough challenge Olympic opener

The Malkia Strikers face a tough start to their 2024 Olympic campaign, opening against two-time champions Brazil, as they aim to surpass their previous group stage exits in their second consecutive Olympic appearance.

The Malkia Strikers, Kenya's national women's volleyball team, will face a formidable challenge in their opening Group B match of the 2024 Olympic Games. They are set to play against two-time Olympic champions Brazil on Monday, July 29, 2024, at 2 PM EAT at the South Paris Arena.

This will be the Malkia Strikers' second consecutive Olympic appearance, as they strive to improve on their past performances, having not advanced beyond the group stage in their four previous Olympic appearances.

Historically, the Malkia Strikers have faced Brazil's Conarinhas seven times, including matches at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, losing on all occasions without winning a set.

Captain Triza Atuka anticipates a tough encounter but says the team is ready for the battle.

"We know it is going to be a very tough match but we have equally prepared well for this specific Olympics. The mood in camp has been great and we are ready to give it our best shot." She said.

The ten-time African champions will continue their group stage campaign against Poland on Wednesday at 10 PM, followed by a match against Japan, the 1964 Tokyo Olympic gold medalists, on August 3rd.
