CAF president Patrice Motsepe announces re-election bid for 2025

By |

Dr. Patrice Motsepe has announced his bid for a second term as CAF President, allegedly following calls from key stakeholders and regional leaders. The decision, officially confirmed by CAF, sets the stage for a closely watched election in March 2025.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe has confirmed his intention to run for a second term as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).The decision allegedly follows appeals from several CAF Member Association Presidents, Zonal Union Presidents, and key stakeholders.

“Following requests from numerous CAF Member Association Presidents, Zonal Union Presidents, and key stakeholders, the CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has finally agreed to stand as a candidate at the CAF Presidential Elections scheduled for March 2025,” said a statement from CAF.

Motsepe was initially elected unopposed in 2021 during the 43rd CAF General Assembly in Rabat, Morocco, succeeding Ahmad Ahmad. Ahmad, who served as CAF President from 2017 to 2021, was barred from seeking re-election due to allegations of financial misconduct.

Motsepe, now seeking a second term, is likely to focus on his achievements during his first spell, which included significant financial reforms. His tenure saw increased subventions to member associations and efforts to stabilize CAF's finances, helping the body recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It remains unclear who Motsepe will face in the March 2025 elections. However, reports suggest that Hany Abo Rida, a member of the FIFA Council and former president of the Egyptian Football Association, could be preparing to challenge the incumbent.
