Tanzania surpasses tourism target, attracts record 5.36 million tourists in 2024
Chana attributed the impressive growth in tourist numbers to the government's strategic initiatives aimed at rejuvenating the sector after the setbacks caused by Covid-19.
Tanzania set a new tourism record in 2024, welcoming 5.36 million visitors and surpassing its target of attracting five million tourists by 2025, according to Pindi Chana, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Dar es Salaam, Chana highlighted that, out of the total number of tourists, 3.22 million were domestic travellers, while 2.14 million were international visitors.

The tourism sector generated approximately Sh516.7 billion ($4 billion) in revenue, though it fell short of the government’s ambitious goal of Sh775.1 billion ($6 billion) by December 2025.

“These efforts have effectively showcased Tanzania's breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, positioning the nation as a desirable travel destination,” she stated.
Despite the success in attracting visitors, the meeting also underscored the need for continued collaboration among industry stakeholders, including investors, travel companies, and government officials. Discussions focused on strategies to further develop Tanzania’s tourism potential and increase revenue generation.
"Strengthening partnerships and investing in sustainable tourism practices will be key to ensuring long-term growth and economic benefits for the country," Chana emphasised.
