Spotify to introduce 'Music Pro' in 2025 – but at an extra cost

The new Music Pro tier is expected to cost around Sh900 ($6) more than the existing Sh1,800 ($12) Premium subscription, bringing the total to approximately Sh2,700 ($18) per month.

Spotify has confirmed that it will be rolling out its high-fidelity music streaming, this year but with a twist.

According to Bloomberg, the company is set to launch a new premium tier called Spotify Music Pro, which will introduce CD-quality audio. Something it first promised back in 2021, under the name Spotify HiFi.

High-fidelity, or Hi-Fi music, refers to lossless audio streaming, meaning the music retains all of its original details without compression that reduces quality.

Standard music streaming services use compressed audio formats like MP3 or AAC, which sacrifice certain sound details to reduce file size and make streaming smoother.

With Hi-Fi audio, listeners experience CD-quality or better sound, where instruments, vocals, and subtle nuances are more distinct.

This is particularly beneficial for audiophiles and those using high-end speakers or headphones. In contrast, normal streaming quality often results in muffled sound, loss of depth, and weaker bass or treble performance.

Unlike Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer, and Amazon Music, which offer lossless audio at no extra cost, Spotify is taking a different approach.

The new Music Pro tier is expected to cost around Sh900 ($6) more than the existing Sh1,800 ($12) Premium subscription, bringing the total to approximately Sh2,700 ($18) per month.

Is it worth paying more for lossless audio?

For those who value top-tier sound quality, especially when using high-resolution audio equipment, the upgrade could be a game-changer.

As a long-time Spotify user for over three years, one of my favourite features has always been seamless device-switching. Being able to control playback across multiple devices without interruption is incredibly convenient.

Additionally, the Spotify Wrapped feature keeps me coming back each year. It summarises the top artists and songs I have listened to throughout the year.

Whether users are willing to pay the extra Sh900 ($6) per month will depend on their listening preferences and audio setup. With the official launch date yet to be confirmed, Music Pro could be a significant step forward for Spotify's dominance in the streaming industry.

The question now is whether users will be willing to pay for premium sound quality or stick with what they already have.

The availability of Music Pro might differ from one region to another, depending on whether Spotify finalizes agreements with all major record labels.
