The smartwatch, originally codenamed “Milan”, has been in development for several years and is now set to make its debut during or around Meta’s annual Connect conference, scheduled for September 17 to 18.
Meta is preparing to unveil a new generation of wearable technology with the launch of a smartwatch that has a built-in camera and artificial intelligence capabilities.
The smartwatch, which is expected to be announced this September, marks Meta’s re-entry into the smartwatch market after a previously shelved project, signalling the tech giant’s growing focus on AI-driven, camera-first devices.

According to reports from DigiTimes and other industry insiders, the smartwatch, originally codenamed “Milan”, has been in development for several years and is now set to make its debut during or around Meta’s annual Connect conference, scheduled for September 17 to 18.
What will the device feature
The device is said to feature dual cameras and a deep integration with Meta’s AI services, including real-time image recognition and smart assistant features.
The original Milan prototype, which surfaced in 2021, included a front-facing 5-megapixel camera for video calls and a larger rear camera with 1080p video recording capabilities.
It was designed with a curved display and removable watch face, possibly allowing the device to be detached from the wrist for camera use, an innovation that may carry through to the new model.
Although the initial version was cancelled in 2022 due to cost concerns and technical challenges, Meta has since revived the project with a renewed focus on integrating AI functionality.
Sources suggest the company now envisions the smartwatch not just as a fitness tracker or communication tool, but as a hands-free, camera-powered device that helps users interact with their surroundings in smarter ways.
Production of the smartwatch is reportedly underway with Chinese manufacturer Huaqin Technology, and Meta is believed to be finalising both software and hardware components ahead of its public unveiling.
While official specifications remain under wraps, the device is expected to support cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, and health tracking features.
Battery life is projected to last around 18 hours, similar to most current-generation smartwatches.
Crucially, the smartwatch will tie directly into Meta’s broader ecosystem, offering seamless integration with apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and its growing Meta AI assistant platform.
The device is also seen as a companion to Meta’s existing wearable offerings, such as the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and Quest VR headsets.
Pricing details have yet to be confirmed, though earlier prototypes were expected to retail around $349(Sh45,109.72), positioning the watch below premium offerings from Apple and Samsung.
However, Meta may keep a similar price to make the watch more affordable and attract more users in the crowded smartwatch market.
