President Ruto's call to address unemployment, emphasises urgency of the issue

President William Ruto today called for urgent intervention measures to curb the escalating unemployment crisis in the country. Speaking during the official opening of the Trans-Nzoia Community ICT hub in Kitale, the president said that unless strategic measures were put in place, millions of jobless young people would continue to end up on the streets.

He announced that the government was implementing programs and policies to create jobs for the youth. He identified the Affordable Housing Programme, digital jobs, and the export of labor as some of the government’s programs that would create job opportunities for the youth. The president also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to set up ICT hubs in every ward to equip youth with the necessary digital skills to tap into online opportunities.

“The digital hubs have already enabled 119,000 youth to access jobs,” said the president. The President urged youth who have undergone digital training in the hubs to mentor many other youth in an effort to help them access digital jobs.

On December 2023, the ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo announced plans by the government to build 1,450 ICT hubs for digital literacy training, film creation, and public access to government services in all wards across the country beginning in 2024.

The idea was first proposed by the government in 2022 and was included in Kenya’s Digital Masterplan 2022-2032, which governs the systematic delivery of ICT infrastructure, services, and skill development.
