At least 500,000 newborns in Kenya miss out on exclusive breastfeeding every year. This exposes them to illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhoea. Despite widespread awareness of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding the first six months of a baby’s life, real-life challenges faced by mothers in urban centres, especially those in informal settlements, are a barrier to exclusive breastfeeding.
