MP Yusuf Hassan says Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was a freedom fighter who led from the front—through writing, speech, and organised resistance. He recalls Ngũgĩ’s 1982 move to London, then a hub for political activism and a refuge for exiles and the rise of movements like the December 12th Movement which became rallying points against Kenya’s authoritarianism under the Moi regime. “We could no longer remain passive—we needed to act and stand with the Kenyan people,” he said.
