PS Umi Bashir engages youth in Eastleigh, calls for positive social media use and entrepreneurship

Heritage and Culture Principal Secretary Umi Bashir visited Eastleigh and reached out to the youth from her home county, Wajir.

Addressing a gathering of young individuals, Umi aimed to allay their concerns regarding the pressing issue of unemployment, emphasising that it is a global challenge.

In her interactions, Umi cautioned them against the misuse of social media platforms, particularly by bloggers who propagate fake news and fuel tribalism.

Urging the youth to utilise social media positively, she expressed concern over the divisive messages circulating on platforms like WhatsApp, noting that they often contravene cultural values.

Highlighting her role as a supportive figure within the government, Umi reassured the youth of her readiness to lend an ear to their grievances.

"Basically, the reason I came here was to reassure the youth that they have a big sister in government who is ready to listen to them," she affirmed.

Umi, who expressed happiness being in Eastleigh for the third time, disclosed her regular engagement with the youth, committing to carry forward their discussions every three months.

Recognising unemployment as a primary concern, she urged the youth to explore entrepreneurial avenues if traditional employment opportunities remain scarce.

"If employment fails, let's think of self-employment, let's think outside the box," she advised.

Positioning herself as a mentor and advocate for neglected youth, Umi particularly encouraged young women to actively pursue employment opportunities and attend such forums.

She expressed disappointment at the low female turnout and urged women to participate in similar gatherings, emphasising the importance of their involvement.

"I have noticed there were no girls in this meeting, I want to urge my sisters to attend these kinds of meetings," said Umi.

It was the first time Umi came to Kamukunji, particularly Eastleigh, since she was appointed as a Principal Secretary by President William Ruto.
