Mombasa beach ban lifted after Cyclone Hidaya dissipates

While access is restored, residents are advised to remain cautious due to expected rains and strong winds.

Residents and visitors of Mombasa can once again enjoy beach areas as the county government has lifted the ban imposed just two days ago due to Cyclone Hidaya.

County Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir initially issued a directive on Saturday, restricting public access to beaches in anticipation of Cyclone Hidaya's impact at the Coast region. However, in a recent press release on Tuesday, the county announced the ban's removal.

"Following the cyclone's landfall, the County Government of Mombasa has lifted the ban on beach access, allowing members of the public and hotel visitors to resume enjoying our coastline," he said in a press release.

While access is restored, residents are advised to remain cautious due to expected rains and strong winds.

Governor Abdulswamad expressed appreciation for cooperation with security agencies that ensured safety and compliance during the ban period.

“I take this opportunity to appreciate your cooperation with the various security agencies, the Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Police and County Inspectorate teams who patrolled the beaches to ensure safety and compliance with the directive,” he said.

The decision to impose the ban was based on meteorological reports forecasting strong winds, high tides, and heavy rains along the Kenyan Coast due to Cyclone Hidaya.

The governor emphasised strict adherence to the directive, stating that hotel management would be held responsible for any loss of life resulting from non-compliance.

To enforce compliance, the governor directed Kenya Coast Guard, Kenya Police, and County Inspectorate teams to conduct patrols along the beaches.
