Korea Marine Transport Container (KMTC) Shipping Line marked a significant milestone as it deployed its inaugural vessel to the African continent, selecting the port of Mombasa as its inaugural port of call on January 11, 2023.

The MV KMTC Hochmihn made its maiden call, bringing 1000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) for the local and transit market. The KMTC General Manager, Mr. Mayur Udyawar, said this move reinforces the strategic importance of the Port of Mombasa as a pivotal shipping and maritime hub, establishing it as a preferred port of call for shipping lines. The occasion also serves as a testament to the region's and the country's growth, evident in the increasing traffic of cargo volumes.

Mr. Mayur Udyawar highlighted the Port of Mombasa's productivity and efficiency, expressing satisfaction with the choice made since the commencement of operations in 2021. Despite entering the market two years ago, KMTC Shipping Line collaborated with other shipping lines to transport cargo to the region. MV KMTC Hochimihn is now the first vessel under the line to navigate the Southeast Asia-East Africa route, signifying a positive outlook for handling more cargo.

Mr. Mayur emphasized that Kenya was chosen as the gateway to Africa, reflecting the shipping line's aspirations to expand operations on the continent. The Kenya Ports Authority views this deployment as a welcome development, affirming consistent efforts to enhance capacity and efficiency at the port.
