KeNHA closes sections of Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road for roadworks

The affected area lies at the intersection of Waiyaki Way (A8), the Southern Bypass, and the Western Bypass. The closure is intended to enable reconstruction of the south-western interchange ramp, loops, and slip roads. The works commenced on Saturday, June 28 and are expected to continue until Monday, August 11, 2025.

Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to prepare for traffic disruptions following the Kenya National Highways Authority’s (KeNHA) announcement of closures on two major routes- Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way- to facilitate maintenance and reconstruction works.

In a public notice, KeNHA informed the public of temporary traffic disruptions at the Gitaru Interchange due to the closure of the south-western loop.

To manage traffic during this period:

Motorists travelling from Waiyaki Way to the Southern Bypass are advised to divert at the Sigona Golf Club junction and use the E1507 Kikuyu Link Road.

Traffic from Nakuru to the Southern Bypass will use a newly constructed south-eastern loop and proceed through a diversion created at the median of the Southern Bypass.

Vehicles from the Western Bypass heading to Waiyaki Way will use the Muguku Interchange and connect to the Kikuyu Link Road at Sigona.

“Motorists are requested to exercise caution around the work areas, follow the proposed traffic management plan provided, and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” KeNHA stated.

Separately, the authority also announced a temporary partial closure of the Nairobi-bound carriageway of the A8 Road between the General Motors Roundabout (FUSO Simba Colt) and the Southern Bypass Interchange at Ole Sereni.

This closure is scheduled to begin on Saturday, July 5 and end on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to facilitate essential highway maintenance works.

During this period, heavy vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes and those heading to the Southern Bypass will be diverted to exit the main highway at the Kyang’ombe Slip Road via Old Mombasa Road.

Other vehicles will use a single lane maintained through the affected section.
