According to Metrin Muhonja, the fire broke out around 7 pm Tuesday while it was raining. She had stepped outside to collect clothes from the line when she noticed flames.
Muhonja attempted to re-enter the house to rescue her husband and children but her neighbours restrained her.
The fire affected 61 houses, leaving 150 families homeless.
Police and local leaders have yet to determine the cause of the fire, but investigations are underway.
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan described the fire as the deadliest in the area since he assumed office.
Speaking at the scene of the disaster on Wednesday morning, Yusuf sent his condolences to the affected families and promised to seek solutions for those who lost their loved ones and property.
"We have never lost this huge number of people in Kamukunji since I became a Member of Parliament. It is a great disaster," said the MP.
The Kamukunji MP called for urgent action to support the survivors and rebuild the affected community.
He urged the government and humanitarian organisations to step in with aid, including shelter, food, and counselling services for those who witnessed the tragedy.
The MP emphasised the need for improved disaster preparedness and mitigation strategies in the area to prevent similar incidents in the future.
