Nairobi County workers have reason to celebrate after Governor Johnson Sakaja announced a new affordable housing plan for employees in three satellite city locations.
The move, which was approved during the 40th County Executive Committee meeting on Tuesday at City Hall, is aimed at addressing the underutilisation of public land and improving staff welfare.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Sakaja, discussed various presentations and memoranda before concluding that three parcels of land in Mavoko and along the Northern Bypass were at risk of encroachment and misuse due to their lack of development.
"During this meeting, the Cabinet engaged in thorough deliberations on various presentations, memoranda, and directives," the Cabinet dispatch read.
The Cabinet approved the creation of a county staff housing scheme on the identified lands.
The scheme will feature affordable housing for county employees, alongside retail and commercial spaces, as well as social amenities such as sports facilities and public utilities.
Avoid encroachment
The project has three primary objectives: safeguarding public land from encroachment, promoting staff welfare through affordable housing, and enhancing urban planning by integrating residential, commercial, and recreational spaces for sustainable development.
The committee noted that significant public funds had been spent to acquire the pieces of land, and their continued disuse would result in unnecessary maintenance and security costs.

"Secure and affordable housing for county employees will contribute to staff retention and performance," the committee noted.
This initiative draws inspiration from President William Ruto's national affordable housing programme, which focuses on improving living standards, particularly in underdeveloped areas.
As part of the programme, beneficiaries will register via the Boma Yangu portal, pay a deposit for their preferred house, and begin their journey toward homeownership.
Priority will be given to those who were evicted from areas where new houses will be built.
This housing initiative is expected to provide lasting benefits for both Nairobi County workers and the city's urban development.
