Fishermen in Lamu County received a welcome boost today as the County Government, in partnership with the World Bank-funded Kenya Marine Fisheries and Socio-Economic Development (KEMFSED) project, provided six modern, fiber-made deep-sea fishing boats and essential equipment. This initiative, part of a broader Sh66 million project supporting 33 community groups in Faza ward, aims to enhance livelihood opportunities and manage fisheries sustainably.

Speaking at the boat handover ceremony in Mtangawanda, Lamu Governor Issa Timamy emphasized the positive impact of the KEMFSED project. "This support will significantly boost food security and reduce rural poverty by increasing household income," he stated. He further highlighted the project's alignment with the county's agricultural and fishing development goals.

The fishermen expressed their joy and newfound optimism. Somo Bwana, one of the recipients, declared, "These modern boats are a game-changer! They'll mean smoother sailing and more efficient fishing." His colleague, Lali Shosi, echoed the sentiment, stating, "This will be a lifeline for our families, paving the way for food security and a brighter future."

Salim Mwinyihaji, another beneficiary, expressed confidence in the potential of the new equipment. "Lamu's waters hold rich treasures, and now we have the gear to unlock them," he declared.

Adding to the support, Governor Timamy also awarded 55 diving sets to sea cucumber divers and 15 coxswain certifications to qualified boat operators.

This initiative marks a significant step towards improving the livelihoods and well-being of Lamu's coastal communities. With better tools and resources, fishermen can now operate more efficiently, enhance food security.
