Mombasa County launches tourism council to elevate city as premier tourist destination

Mombasa County has set up the Mombasa Tourism Council, a pivotal move aimed at spearheading tourism development and promotion in the region.

Led by a diverse panel of experts representing various sectors, the council is tasked with elevating Mombasa as a premier tourist destination.

Comprising representatives from tourism associations, businesses, government agencies, and local communities, the council is mandated to coordinate, plan, and implement initiatives that enhance tourism growth.

With a focus on sustainability and collaboration, the council aims to leverage Mombasa's natural beauty and cultural richness to attract visitors from around the globe.

The council, composed of representatives from tourism associations, businesses, government bodies, and local communities, embodies a comprehensive approach to fostering sustainable tourism development.

Council members

Among them include Dr Sam Ikwaye Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers, Jentiffa Wanzina of the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, Rehab Nderu of the Kenya Coast Tourism Association, Patrick Kamanga of the Kenya Association of Travel Agents and Fatma Twahir representing the National Museums of Kenya

Sukaina Alhuseiny will represent the Local Community and Digital Space.

Others are Naftali Biwott representing the Tourism Fund, Fiona Ngesa of Kenya Tourism Board, Tom Odhiambo Tourism Regulatory Authority, Jacqueline Jepkoech-Swahilipot Hub and Japheth Omonfi from the Tourist Police Unit.

With a shared vision of positioning Mombasa as a top-tier tourist destination, the council is entrusted with the pivotal role of orchestrating efforts to enhance the visitor experience and drive economic growth.

Under the astute leadership of the Director of Tourism, the council will assume the mantle of primary planning, coordination, and regulatory authority in shaping the future trajectory of Mombasa's tourism landscape.

“From devising strategic marketing campaigns to implementing innovative initiatives, the council is poised to unlock the full potential of Mombasa's tourism industry,” said Mohamed Osman, the County Executive Committee Member for Tourism.

He noted the council's mandate extends beyond conventional tourism promotion, encompassing a commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and inclusive growth.

By championing sustainable practices and empowering local communities, the council endeavours to cultivate a tourism ecosystem that thrives in harmony with its natural surroundings.

The Mombasa Tourism Minister, Mohamed Osman expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the Mombasa Tourism Council.

He emphasised the council's role as a catalyst for change, poised to showcase Mombasa's unparalleled beauty and cultural heritage to the global stage.

“With the emergence of new travel routes and heightened interest in cruise tourism, Mombasa stands poised to seize newfound opportunities and emerge as a beacon of tourism excellence,” Mohamed said.
