Motorists using section of Mombasa-Nairobi Highway to face two-week traffic disruption

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that the closure will affect the stretch between Makupa Bridge and the Changamwe Interchange.
A section of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway will be closed from Sunday, November 17, to Sunday, December 1, 2024, to facilitate road and drainage construction.

KeNHA warned of potential traffic disruptions during the construction period and urged motorists to adhere to the outlined traffic management plan.
"KeNHA wishes to notify the public that a section of the Mombasa-Nairobi (A8) Highway will experience traffic disruptions between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe Interchange," the Authority said in a public notice issued on Friday.
KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndung’u explained that the construction aims to improve connectivity between Makupa Bridge and Changamwe.
He assured the public of efforts to minimise inconvenience during the project.
Mohamed Osman, the Trade and Tourism executive for Mombasa County, acknowledged the disruptions but called for measures to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly during the festive season.
“We hope they can reduce the timeline by working 24 hours. Traffic marshals must work around the clock to manage the flow effectively,” he said, adding that the county government would propose additional strategies to ensure smoother operations.
“With the expanded road and KeNHA’s proactive approach, I don’t foresee major issues. They plan to complete the works by December 1, which is reasonable,” Director of Operations at Pollmans Tours & Safaris Mohamed Hersi said.
However, he highlighted ongoing traffic challenges in Mombasa North, particularly in areas undergoing roadwork between Bombolulu and Mtwapa, which he suggested required more attention.
KeNHA has urged road users to cooperate with police and traffic marshals stationed on-site to reduce delays during the construction period.
KeNHA is an autonomous road agency, responsible for the management, development, rehabilitation and maintenance of international trunk roads linking centres of international importance and crossing international boundaries or terminating at international ports.
It is also responsible for primarily roads linking provincially important centres to each other or two higher-class roads.
