Ramadan begins tomorrow as crescent moon is sighted in Saudi Arabia

The month begins when the crescent moon is sighted, marking the start of a month-long period of fasting, self-control, and spiritual reflection.

The holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday after the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia.

The holy month of fasting is observed annually during the ninth month of the Hijri, or Islamic lunar calendar.

The month begins when the crescent moon is sighted, marking the start of a month-long period of fasting, self-control, and spiritual reflection.

Chief Kadhi Abdulhalim Hussein on Thursday urged all Muslims to observe the moon sighting, as it marks the beginning of Ramadan.

Abdisalam Mohamed, an Islamic scholar in Garissa, said the month is one of the most important acts of worship and the fourth pillar of Islam.

He encouraged Muslims to take advantage of the holy month, describing it as a journey towards freedom from hellfire and admission into paradise.

"An opportunity is just knocking at the door. Let’s usher in this special month with honest intentions, sincere hearts, and open hands," he said.

"Fasting goes beyond abstaining from eating and drinking; it involves complete self-regulation, self-control, and self-discipline. Almost all body organs, including the eyes, tongue, ears, hands, legs, reproductive organs, and stomach, should be in a state of fasting."

He explained that new routines during the holy month include regular attendance of both obligatory and supererogatory prayers and reading the Quran, with a target of completing it at least once during the month.

The preacher said Muslims were expected to spend more time praising and remembering their Creator, providing Iftar (food to break the fast) to the needy, giving charity, forbidding evil, and attending spiritually enriching lessons, among various other virtuous deeds.

He added that the month serves as an opportunity to seek forgiveness and promote self and societal reforms.

The topic of how to observe the holy month of Ramadan dominated Friday sermons in all mosques in Garissa as Muslims prepared to observe the holy month over the weekend.
