Employers lobby calls for strategic overhaul of CBC

Mugo urged the government to prioritize equipping schools, particularly in rural areas, with the necessary infrastructure for the seamless implementation of the CBC system.

The umbrella of employers in Kenya, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE), has urged the government to ensure it streamlines the implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) to better align it with the evolving needs of the job market.

Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of FKE Jacqueline Mugo explained the need for the government to take strategic measures to improve CBC's effectiveness.

"While FKE acknowledges the government's commitment to implementing CBC, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive strategy to address current challenges and ensure the curriculum meets the dynamic requirements of the job market," she said.

The lobby spoke during the official launch of new classrooms at Omuga Primary School in Homa Bay County, funded by FKE under the Adopt A School Program.

Mugo urged the government to prioritize equipping schools, particularly in rural areas, with the necessary infrastructure for the seamless implementation of the CBC system.

Emphasizing the importance of practical skills alongside academic excellence, she stressed the need for graduates to possess competencies that are in high demand by employers.

Recognizing the increasing role of technology in the workforce, FKE asked the government to invest in technology in the early stages of learning like from grades 6-7.

It said waiting until high school may hinder students' preparedness for the technology-driven future job market.

FKE stressed the importance of providing students with practical skills that will make them competitive and adaptable in their careers.

Addressing concerns raised by parents regarding the transition period in the CBC, Mugo highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Grade 9 students who will remain in primary schools where Junior Secondary is based.

FKE urged the Ministry of Education to provide clear communication and leadership to alleviate parental concerns and ensure a smooth transition for the students.

The Adopt A School Program was Launched in 2009. It is one of FKE's initiatives contributing to the well-being and development of communities, with a focus on education and the elimination of child labor, creating a positive impact on communities and society at large.
