In a circular dated October 16, 2025, and addressed to all teachers, the Commission announced that the affected interviews will now take place between Tuesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 23, 2025.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has postponed all teachers’ promotional interviews initially set for Friday, October 17, 2025, following the government’s declaration of the day as a public holiday to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a circular dated October 16, 2025, and addressed to all teachers, the Commission announced that the affected interviews will now take place between Tuesday, October 21, and Thursday, October 23, 2025.

“Following the Government’s declaration of Friday, October 17, 2025, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga, the Teachers Service Commission has suspended all promotional interviews previously scheduled for that day,” the statement read in part.
Acting Commission Secretary and CEO Eveleen Mitei said Regional Directors will communicate the revised schedules and logistical details to the affected teachers in due course.
“The affected interviews will be rescheduled across the three working days, commencing Tuesday, October 21, through Thursday, October 23, 2025,” Mitei said.
Mitei expressed appreciation to teachers for their patience and professionalism during the changes, noting the Commission’s commitment to maintaining smooth operations despite the adjustments.
“We appreciate your professionalism, continued commitment and understanding,” she said.
The Commission further described the day as a time for reflection on the life and legacy of the late Odinga, recognising his immense contribution to democracy and education.
“This moment offers us all an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of a national icon whose contributions to democracy and education remain indelible,” the Commission said.
The government declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a national holiday to commemorate the late Odinga, who passed away on October 15. The declaration, issued by the Ministry of Interior through a gazette notice on October 16, was made under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, October 17, 2025, shall be a public holiday in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” reads the notice.
The former Prime Minister collapsed during a morning walk and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam.
TSC’s decision affects teachers who had been shortlisted for the ongoing promotional interviews, part of the Commission’s nationwide exercise to assess candidates for advancement.
Earlier, the Commission had advertised 21,313 promotional positions between August 12 and August 25, 2025. Shortlisted candidates were invited for interviews beginning October 6 for primary school teachers and October 13 for post-primary teachers, senior principals and curriculum support officers.
Regional and county-level interviews have been underway since then, with the postponed session marking the final phase of the exercise.
