Matano takes over from Patrick Odhiambo, who was suspended in May alongside assistant Jeffer Odongo and trainer Erick Muranda following a poor run of results that saw KCB go winless in their final five league outings. Goalkeepers’ trainer Sam Koko had been in interim charge, guiding the team to a ninth-place finish with 42 points.
Matano returns to the Kenyan Premier League after a short stint with Tanzania’s Fountain Gate FC. Despite joining the Tanzanian side in January, he quietly left before the season’s end and had been spotted attending local FKFPL matches in the final weeks of the 2024/25 campaign signalling a potential homecoming.
This latest assignment adds to Matano’s storied coaching journey. He is one of the most decorated tacticians in Kenyan football, boasting league title triumphs with Sofapaka in 2009 and Tusker in 2012, 2020/21, and 2021/22.
His previous roles also include spells with AFC Leopards, where he served as both technical director and head coach, as well as stints at Ulinzi Stars, World Hope (now Nairobi City Stars), and Kenya Pipeline.
Matano’s return is seen as a bold and ambitious move by KCB, a club long accused of underachieving despite its stable financial backing and strong player pool. His arrival is expected to usher in a culture of tactical discipline, defensive organization, and a competitive edge traits synonymous with his previous successes.
Known for transforming underdog teams into title contenders, Matano now shoulders the responsibility of delivering KCB’s first major silverware.
With the 2025/26 FKF Premier League season looming, all eyes will be on the Bankers and their new lion at the helm, Robert Matano tasked with not just rebuilding, but leading a serious title charge.
