Recipe: How to make a classic orange mojito at home

The orange mojito is a vibrant and zesty alternative to its classic lemon mojito, infusing the traditional mint and soda blend with the sweetness and tang of fresh oranges.

Refreshing beverages have become a must-have in many homes, and you do not have to be a mixologist to enjoy a perfect mojito with your friends.

While traditional mojitos are known for their tangy lime-and-mint flavour, a new citrus twist is gaining popularity: the orange mojito.

The orange mojito is a vibrant and zesty alternative to its classic lemon mojito, infusing the traditional mint and soda blend with the sweetness and tang of fresh oranges.

Whether you are entertaining guests, looking for a midday drink, or simply trying something new, this tropical mocktail is both easy to make and visually striking.

Use the bright orange variety of oranges, not the one with green skin, for a sweeter and more vibrant flavour.

Ingredients

• 1 large orange, freshly squeezed (or about ½ cup fresh orange juice)

• ½ lime, cut into wedges

• 8–10 fresh mint leaves

• 2 teaspoons sugar or syrup (adjust to taste)

• Ice cubes

• Soda water (or sparkling water)

• Orange slices and mint, for garnish

Steps to follow

Step 1

In a strong glass or a bowl, add lime wedges, sugar, and mint leaves. Use a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon to gently mash the ingredients; this releases the mint oils, lime juice and helps dissolve the sugar.

Step 2

Pour the freshly squeezed orange juice into the mixture and then stir to combine with the muddled mixture. This is where the mojito gets its signature citrusy sweetness.

Step 3

Now, fill the glass with ice cubes to lock in the flavour.

Step 4

Slowly pour soda water until the glass is full. If you want a fizzy mocktail, soda water works perfectly.

Step 5

Garnish with an orange slice and a leaf of mint for a professional touch. Then serve immediately with a straw and enjoy!

Extra tip: If you want to have a bolder orange flavour, muddle a few orange segments along with the lime and mint, then use brown sugar for a deeper, caramel-like sweetness.

You can also use crushed ice to give the drink a slushy texture.
