NCPB and Kenya Seed outlets to remain open during the Easter holiday

The government has reiterated its commitment to supplying quality fertiliser and seeds to farmers, dismissing reports of substandard products.

Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary, Mithika Linturi, has issued a directive to keep all National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and Kenya Seed outlets open during the Easter holiday period, ensuring farmers can procure essential supplies during this crucial planting season.

"The long rains have begun in some parts of the country, signalling the commencement of the planting season. I have instructed all Kenya Seed and NCPB stores in the country to remain open and serve our hardworking farmers," stated CS Linturi.

The government has reiterated its commitment to supplying quality fertiliser and seeds to farmers, dismissing reports of substandard products. Linturi assured farmers that all fertiliser available at NCPB depots undergoes rigorous testing and certification.

"We are supplying quality and standard fertiliser to farmers across the country. All the fertiliser available at NCPB depots is well tested and certified by the laboratories," affirmed Linturi.

Despite these assurances, the quality of fertilisers distributed under the subsidy programme has raised concerns. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture directed NCPB to suspend the distribution of Ken Chemical Limited's NPK 10:26:10 fertiliser, citing its failure to meet required standards.

Agriculture PS Kipronoh Ronoh is looking into the parameters of the suspended fertiliser. This decision comes after investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) found fake fertilisers in the counties of Baringo and Nakuru.

Farmers impacted by the delivery of inferior fertilisers have expressed dissatisfaction with the items and requested refunds. President William Ruto has issued a stern warning to suppliers involved in selling fake fertiliser, emphasising the government's commitment to eliminating corruption in the supply chain.

"We are going to ensure that those who sell fake seeds or fake fertilisers face the music they deserve. Just today, we have arrested some characters who want to take advantage of our fertiliser supply programme," stated President Ruto.

Farmers should remain vigilant and continue purchasing from authorised outlets as the government takes measures to address concerns over the quality of subsidised inputs. The Ministry of Agriculture says it remains dedicated to supporting farmers and enhancing food security in the country.
