Speaking to the press during the event, the governor said a total of 102,000 bags of maize and 3,000 cartons of oil were purchased as relief aid to support the victims of last year's prolonged drought.
He identified communities living in Kibish, Kaeris, Nakalale, Kerio Delta, Lodwar town, Kolokoi, Lapur, and Kalapata, Kaaleng wards as the first beneficiaries of the relief food programme. Lomorukai announced that the county was partnering with Non-Governmental Organizations, including the World Food Program, to boost the government's efforts to support all households affected by drought in Turkana County. Yesterday, the county government also flagged off over 4,000 bags of unimix porridge to 1,025 Early Childhood Development Education Center (ECDC).
According to Turkana County Executive Committee Member for the ECDC, Leah Audan, the distribution of the Unimix porridge will boost the schools' enrollment, transition, and retention rates. Turkana includes counties in the ASAL regions grappling with poor school enrollment and a widening gap of gender disparity in girls' child education.
