Gor Mahia free to register Benson Omalla after receiving player’s ITC

Benson Omalla is set to return to action for Gor Mahia after FIFA cleared the way for his registration by issuing his International Transfer Certificate, ending a months-long standoff with Lebanese side Al Safa.

Benson Omalla can finally complete his return to record Kenyan top-flight champions Gor Mahia after the club received his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) from FIFA through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

"We can now register Omalla after FIFA issued his ITC. We will start fielding him once FKF completes the process by issuing us with his player licence card," a source at the club, who requested anonymity, told The Eastleigh Voice.

Omalla, 23, was the league's top scorer last season with 19 goals, helping Gor Mahia defend their league title and extend their record to 21 championships.

He joined the club from Western Stima in 2020 and was briefly loaned to Swedish side FC Linköping City in 2021.

He returned to Gor Mahia in 2022 and finished the 2022–23 season as the league’s second-highest scorer with 26 goals, playing a key role in reclaiming the title from Tusker.

Following his exploits in the 2023–24 season, during which he won both the league title and the Golden Boot, Omalla joined Lebanese club Al Safa, with Gor Mahia confirming his departure in August 2024.

However, after struggling to settle at the Middle East club and facing non-payment of his salary, Omalla returned to Kenya in September 2024.

A planned return to Al Safa was derailed by the outbreak of the Israeli–Hezbollah conflict in October 2024.

In January, Omalla sought to terminate his contract after the club failed to pay him for three months. His request sparked a dispute with Al Safa, who refused to release him - delaying his return to Gor Mahia.

To resolve the impasse, Omalla appealed to FIFA last week. The global football body ruled in his favour this week, authorising the release of his ITC to Gor Mahia.

If Gor Mahia completes his registration with FKF during the week, Omalla is expected to feature in K’Ogalo’s league match against Bandari in Mombasa on Saturday.
