Congo Brazzaville joins CECAFA Four Nations Tournament as Sudan withdraws

With the new development, the tournament will now feature Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Congo Brazzaville, with the guest side stepping in to ensure the four-team format is retained.

Congo Brazzaville has been drafted in to replace Sudan in the upcoming CECAFA Four Nations tournament, set for July 21–27 at the Karatu Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania.

With the new development, the tournament will now feature Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Congo Brazzaville, with the guest side stepping in to ensure the four-team format is retained.

Sudan, who had initially been included in the competition, opted to pull out in order to focus on their domestic league, which recently resumed.

This decision prompted CECAFA to revise the tournament structure, moving from a knockout format to a round-robin setup, where each team plays three matches. The team with the highest points at the end of the tournament will be crowned champion.

Congo Brazzaville will begin their campaign against hosts Tanzania on the opening day, July 21, in what will be the second match of the day. Earlier in the afternoon, Kenya will face off against Uganda in the tournament opener.

The tournament will continue on July 24, with Congo Brazzaville taking on Uganda in the early kick-off before Tanzania meets Kenya in the second match of the day.

The final round of fixtures will be played on July 27, with Kenya battling Congo Brazzaville in the early slot and Uganda clashing with Tanzania in the closing match.

According to Auka John Gecheo, the Executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), the tournament is designed to help teams from the region fine-tune their preparations ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is set to kick off in August 2025.

“The primary objective of this competition is to offer our zonal teams a valuable platform to prepare adequately ahead of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August 2025,” Gecheo said as seen by CECAFA.

He emphasised that the competition provides a vital platform for zonal teams to assess their readiness before the continental event.

The four nations will field squads composed exclusively of home-based players, in line with CHAN regulations.
