Eldas Member of Parliament Adan Keynan, also a relative of Yusuf, confirmed his return, stating that he is in good health and good spirits.

Dela Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Yussuf Hussein Tolfiyo has been reunited with his family in Nairobi, months after he disappeared in September last year.

Eldas Member of Parliament Adan Keynan, also a relative of Yussuf, confirmed his return, stating that he is in good health and good spirits.

Adan said the family attributes Yussuf’s safe return to divine intervention rather than any individual or institution.

"Thank God Yussuf is alive and at home. He is in good health. His reappearance is by the grace of Allah," he said.

The MP further stated that the family would release more details about Yussuf’s disappearance and return at a later date.

Wajir Governor and the Council of Governors Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi also expressed joy and relief after the safe return of Yussuf.

"Alhamdulillah! I am happy to have received the good news of Hon. Yussuf Hussein’s safe return and reunion with his family after months of uncertainty. Since his disappearance in September last year, the people of Wajir have endured a painful period of anxiety, prayers, and unwavering hope for his safe return. The news of his reunion brings immense relief and joy to our community. It is a moment of gratitude and renewed hope for his family and all those who stood by them during these difficult times," he said on X.

"On behalf of the people of Wajir County, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a role in ensuring his safe return. May this moment mark the beginning of healing, peace, and renewed strength for him and his loved ones."

Wajir Woman Rep Fatuma Jehow confirmed that relatives and loved ones welcomed the Dela Ward MCA on Saturday evening at their home in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

"This is a huge wave of relief, a tidal wave of joy. I can almost feel the collective sigh of relief from every Wajirian, especially our beloved people of Eldas, who have carried this burden with us," she wrote on Facebook.

News of Yussuf’s return on Saturday evening sparked celebrations in several locations.

In Nairobi’s Eastleigh, a group of residents gathered at the 12th Street roundabout near Equity Bank, where they danced and sang for an hour.

Similar celebrations took place in Pangani, where Yussuf’s family resides, as well as in parts of Wajir County. Residents expressed gratitude for the MCA’s return after months of uncertainty.

Widespread concern

Yussuf’s disappearance on September 13, 2024, along Enterprise Road in Nairobi's Industrial Area.

A month after his disappearance, a body was recovered from Lake Yahud, initially believed to be that of the missing MCA.

Family members and locals crowded the morgue to identify the remains, which showed signs of severe torture and decomposition. However, two independent DNA tests later confirmed that the body was not Yussuf’s.

Following this revelation, all 47 County Assemblies threatened to suspend House sittings until their colleague was found.

The MCAs alleged that Yussuf had been taken by the state for undisclosed reasons. His disappearance came just four days after he had complied with a summons from security agencies in Wajir.

Some reports suggested he may have been a victim of enforced disappearance, a concern that has been raised in Wajir and other parts of Northern Kenya before.

However, his family has not confirmed whether he was held against his will or went into hiding voluntarily.

The circumstances surrounding Yussuf’s disappearance remain unclear. His family have not revealed whether he had faced threats before going missing.

The silence from the government has also left many questions unanswered.

With his return, attention may now shift to clarifying what happened during the months he was missing.
