Juja MP George Koimburi arrested outside church in Kiambu

Additional reports add that the MP's wife sustained minor injuries during the commotion as she attempted to stop her husband's abduction.

Juja MP George Koimburi was on Sunday arrested by suspected government operatives outside a church in Kiambu County.

Reports indicate that he was intercepted by the unidentified individuals while leaving the Full Gospel Church in Mugutha area, before being whisked away in a silver Subaru Forester, a vehicle commonly used by state agents.

Additional reports add that the MP's wife sustained minor injuries during the commotion as she attempted to stop her husband's abduction.

Despite speculation about Koimburi's whereabouts following reports that he had been abducted by government agents last week, Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa has confirmed that the MP had been in hiding since Friday after receiving word of plans to arrest him.

Koimburi, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, resurfaced in Kiambu County on Sunday before being captured.

"Juja MP George Koimburi has just been abducted again by the Subaru men. This time, they grabbed him right outside Full Gospel Church in Mugutha, where he had gone to worship," Thang'wa said in a statement on X on Sunday.

"Not even the screams from the worshippers could stop the DCI. And worse, his wife, Mama Shiru, is injured. She was forcefully removed from the Subaru after insisting she should be arrested together with her husband."

This is not the first time Koimburi had used a motorcycle to evade a police dragnet. In February, he was forced to flee when officers attempted to re-arrest him after a court hearing at the Kiambu Law Courts, where he faced six counts of forging academic certificates.

He was released on a Sh200,000 bail, only to find state operatives waiting for him outside the court. After being alerted to their presence, he briefly fled on foot before jumping onto a boda boda to make his escape.

The latest incident comes amid growing concerns that the ruling regime is targeting allies of former DP Gachagua in what critics have termed a politically motivated crackdown.
