Deputy Auditor General Fredrick Odhiambo dies after brief illness

At 32, Fredrick Oluoch Odhiambo became Director of Forensics at the Office of the Auditor-General before being appointed Deputy Auditor-General for Financial Audit Services in 2020.
Deputy Auditor General CPA Fredrick Oluoch Odhiambo has passed away, following a brief illness, leaving a significant loss for the Office of the Auditor-General and Kenya’s auditing community. He was 42.
In an announcement on Thursday, Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu praised Odhiambo for his dedication and leadership.

“It is with profound sadness that I convey to you the sudden passing of the Deputy Auditor General (FAS2),” she said, highlighting his contributions to the office, the nation, and the global public sector auditing community.
Gathungu remembered DAG Odhiambo as a focused and visionary leader.
“DAG Fredrick has been a focused leader who has made great contributions to the Office of the Auditor-General, the Nation and the global public sector auditing community. This is a sudden and tremendous loss to his family and to the OAG family,” Gathangu added.
Funeral arrangements will be communicated by the Deputy Auditor General for Corporate Services once consultations with the family are concluded.
In the meantime, staff and the public have been urged to keep the late DAG’s family and colleagues in their thoughts and prayers.
Odhiambo had an impressive academic and professional track record. He held a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from Kisii University, an MBA in Strategic Management from Mount Kenya University (2022–2024), an MBA from Warwick Business School, and a master’s in Public Policy and Management from the Kenya School of Government.
He was a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA-K), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and a Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA). His career included senior roles in multinational firms, lecturing at a Kenyan university, and serving as a Senior Auditor at Deloitte and KPMG in West and North Africa.
At 32, Odhiambo became Director of Forensics at the Office of the Auditor-General before being appointed Deputy Auditor-General for Financial Audit Services in 2020.
In this role, he oversaw more than 1,200 auditors and implemented initiatives that expanded the coverage of public expenditure audits nationwide.
