Raila’s remains to be airlifted to Bondo for final night vigil - PS Omollo

Security teams from the Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service have been stationed across Kisumu and Siaya to ensure the smooth coordination of the remaining events.
The remains of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will this evening be flown from Kisumu to his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, where a night vigil will be held ahead of his burial on Sunday.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, addressing the media on Saturday, said the plan to move the body by air was reached after consultations with the family and the National Funeral Steering Committee to guarantee order, safety, and dignity during the transition.

He explained that the decision to avoid road transport was made to prevent logistical challenges and ensure that the late opposition leader’s final journey proceeded without disruptions.
“The body of the former Prime Minister will be flown directly to Bondo. We want to make sure the transition from Kisumu to his home is done smoothly and respectfully,” Omollo said.
The PS added that public viewing at Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu, which was initially expected to end at 3:00 pm, might be extended to allow more mourners to pay their last respects before the airlift.
“We are looking at the possibility of extending the viewing hours to ensure all mourners get a chance to pay their final respects. We want to assure Kenyans that no one will be left out,” he stated.
Omollo called on mourners to remain calm and peaceful throughout the mourning period, saying that Raila’s legacy was built on unity, peace, and justice.
“Raila cherished peace and unity. As Kenyans, it is our duty to honour his legacy by ensuring peace throughout the mourning period, both here in Kisumu and in Bondo where the burial will take place,” he said.
He reassured Raila’s supporters that they are in safe hands under President William Ruto’s leadership, urging them to continue supporting the government.
“The former Premier left us in the government and hands of President Ruto. You're safe there, and we should continue working with the government,” Omollo said.
He further encouraged residents of Nyanza and Raila’s supporters to uphold the broad-based government vision that the late leader championed during his lifetime.
Security teams from the Kenya Defence Forces and the National Police Service have been stationed across Kisumu and Siaya to ensure the smooth coordination of the remaining events.
Omollo described the emotional outpouring witnessed in Kisumu since the arrival of Raila’s body as a reflection of the deep respect and affection Kenyans had for him.
“We have to agree that in the history of this country, there has never been a farewell of this magnitude. This is Raila’s send-off, and it shows the impact he had on generations of Kenyans,” Omollo said.
The night vigil in Bondo is expected to draw thousands of mourners, national leaders, and clergy, marking the beginning of the final phase of Raila Odinga’s journey home.
