Busia destroys Sh21.9 million worth of heroin, bhang in anti-drug operation

The seized drugs had been confiscated from one Mumbi Mwaura, who was convicted by the Busia Law Court on March 18, 2025.

Busia County has destroyed narcotics worth an estimated Sh21.9 million in a major anti-drug operation, signalling the government's ongoing fight against controlled substances.

The operation saw the burning of 3,936 grams of heroin valued at about Sh11.8 million and another 337.2 kilograms of bhang estimated to be worth Sh10.1 million.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the exercise was carried out at Alupe Sub-County Hospital incinerator on Wednesday under the supervision of Busia Law Court Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti, in line with a court order.

"The Chief Magistrate of the Busia Law Court, Hon. Edna Nyaloti, today oversaw the destruction of heroin worth approximately Sh11, 808, 000 at Alupe Sub-County Hospital Incinerator," the DCI statement reads.

"Also destroyed were 337.2 kilograms of bhang, with an estimated street value of Sh10,116,000."

According to the DCI, the seized drugs had been confiscated from one Mumbi Mwaura, who was convicted by the Busia Law Court on March 18, 2025. She was similarly ordered to pay a Sh50 million fine or, in default, face a 50-year prison sentence.

"The destruction exercise was witnessed by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the judiciary, National Police Service (NPS), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Public Health, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and both County and Sub-County security teams," said the DCI.

"The event signifies the government's commitment to the war against cultivation, production, distribution, and sale of narcotic drugs across the country."

Kenya has recorded a sharp increase in drug seizures in recent years, reflecting both intensified enforcement and the growing complexity of narcotics trafficking. Authorities have intercepted rising quantities of heroin, cocaine, and cannabis along major transport and border routes.

According to the 2025 Economic Survey by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), law enforcement agencies confiscated 26,858 kilograms of illegal drugs during the review period, up from 14,259 kilograms in 2023.

The quantity of drugs seized has generally been rising since 2020, when 10,909 kilograms were recovered. In 2021, 13,080 kilograms were seized, but the figure dropped to 5,850 kilograms in 2022 before more than doubling in 2023.
