Global ocean summit set for Mombasa, boosting tourism and business opportunities

The conference, scheduled for June 16 to 18, is expected to attract delegates from more than 100 countries, including government officials, researchers, investors, environmental experts, civil society organisations and private sector representatives.

Mombasa is expected to experience increased tourism activity and new business opportunities after Kenya was selected to host the 11th Our Ocean Conference in June 2026, becoming the first African country to stage the international gathering.
The conference, scheduled for June 16 to 18, is expected to attract delegates from more than 100 countries, including government officials, researchers, investors, environmental experts, civil society organisations and private sector representatives.
The event will place Mombasa at the centre of global discussions on ocean conservation, climate resilience, sustainable fisheries and the blue economy at a time when countries are seeking solutions to growing environmental and economic challenges affecting marine ecosystems.
The conference will be held under the theme, Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future, with discussions expected to focus on marine conservation, financing for ocean-related projects, combating illegal fishing, strengthening coastal livelihoods and expanding sustainable use of marine resources.
Cabinet Secretary for Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho said Kenya's selection to host the summit marked a significant moment for the continent.

"Welcome to Kenya, the first African home of the Our Ocean Conference. As we host the 11th edition, Africa steps forward not just to listen, but to lead the global conversation on ocean health," said CS Joho.
He noted that the meeting would bring together global stakeholders to discuss measures aimed at safeguarding oceans while supporting communities whose livelihoods depend on marine resources.
For Mombasa, local leaders expect the conference to generate economic activity across several sectors, including hospitality, transport, trade and tourism.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir said preparations were underway for the event, which is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the coastal city.
"The 11th Our Ocean Conference is coming to Mombasa. We continue preparations for this historic global event that will place Mombasa at the centre of conversations on the future of our oceans, blue economy and climate resilience," he said.
Abdulswamad added that county authorities were working to ensure local businesses, tourism operators, youth groups and transport providers benefit from opportunities arising from the conference.
The governor further stated that preparations would focus on environmental management, security coordination and community involvement as the county gets ready to host the international delegates.
Kenya's hosting of the summit comes as African countries increasingly push for greater involvement in global ocean governance discussions. The conference is also expected to highlight East Africa's coastal ecosystems, marine biodiversity and ongoing efforts to balance environmental protection with economic development.
The previous edition of the Our Ocean Conference was held in Korea, with Kenya's successful bid ensuring that the global forum will, for the first time, be convened on African soil.
