Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has maintained that police set up road blocks in the morning in order to conduct security checks to ensure that no goons, criminals or individuals carrying weapons participate in or disrupt the June 25 Gen Z commemoration.
Speaking in Kangemi, Nairobi, on Thursday, Masengeli defended the heightened security deployment across Nairobi and its neighbouring counties, insisting that the measures were aimed at safeguarding the public and preventing violence during demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024, protests.
"We have not blocked anyone from using the roads. We are only blocking those who are attempting to cause violence. We are stopping vehicles to check whether some are carrying weapons and criminals. That is our work," Masengeli said.
Masengeli said the country remained calm, noting that citizens were continuing with their daily activities without disruption.

"Our wananchi are safe and are going on with their duties as usual. We are glad that there has not been any violence since this morning. We have not seen anybody's vehicle being burnt, people are going about their work," he said.

He assured the public that the National Police Service would protect all Kenyans, including peaceful demonstrators, regardless of their political affiliation.

"We will ensure the safety of every Kenyan because everybody has a right," he said, adding that police were prepared to facilitate lawful protests.

His remarks came as police maintained a heavy presence on key routes into Nairobi, including sections of Thika Road, Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road and Lang'ata Road.
The heightened security measures coincide with nationwide demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the June 25, 2024, Gen Z protests.
Authorities have said the deployment is intended to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure while ensuring lawful activities continue with minimal disruption.
