In the memorandum, the protesters maintained that while some families of victims and survivors had received financial support, the state had a duty to address the root cause of the violations by holding perpetrators accountable.

Activists and residents in Mombasa have demanded the prosecution of those responsible for the deaths and injuries recorded during the June 25, 2024, anti-government protests, arguing that compensation alone cannot substitute accountability.
During a peaceful procession held on Thursday to commemorate the second anniversary of the protests, the demonstrators presented a memorandum to Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Noor, urging the government to ensure that those behind the killings are brought to justice.
In the memorandum, the protesters maintained that while some families of victims and survivors had received financial support, the state had a duty to address the root cause of the violations by holding perpetrators accountable.
"It is not enough to issue money to the families of victims and survivors of the events of 2024 without addressing the actual problem that led to their injury," the memorandum stated.

The group also called for greater respect for the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest, increased funding for institutions tasked with promoting accountability, stronger action against corruption, meaningful public participation in governance, and measures to address concerns over the country's growing public debt.
The activists further expressed concern over the pace of investigations into deaths linked to the protests, noting that only a few cases have reached the courts despite scores of people reportedly losing their lives during the demonstrations.
They used the occasion to honour those who died during the protests, describing them as individuals who paid the ultimate price while advocating for a more accountable and democratic Kenya.
Among those remembered from the Coast region were Joash Ombati, Denis Otieno, Emmanuel Tata and George Kariuki Gathogo.

Speaking after receiving the memorandum, County Commissioner Mohamed Noor lauded the protesters for maintaining peace throughout the commemoration.
He noted that the demonstration had remained orderly and free from incidents of violence, destruction of property or confrontation with security agencies.
"We appreciate the peaceful manner in which they have exercised their constitutional rights. It is business as usual, no violence and no disruptions. Matatus are also operating,” said Mohamed.
The County Commissioner assured the protesters that their memorandum would be forwarded to the relevant authorities for consideration.
“There are plans by the government to compensate Kenyans who died or got injured, and as Kenyans, we are all together,” he said
