Karua, Orengo demand June 25 be declared public holiday to honour Gen Z victims

Opposition leaders push for June 25 to be declared a national holiday and demand accountability over protest-related killings and police brutality.

Opposition leaders, including Martha Karua and Governor James Orengo, gathered outside Jogoo House to advocate for the families of victims of the June 25, 2024 protests. They are calling for June 25 to be officially recognised as a national public holiday in memory of those killed and injured.
They also urged the government to take responsibility for ongoing concerns, including police brutality, abductions and extrajudicial killings. The leaders demanded a formal public apology to affected families ahead of the upcoming anniversary.
They further called on President William Ruto to renounce “shoot-to-kill” directives, saying they violate the Constitution. They urged Kenyans to join peaceful remembrance events across all 47 counties.
