Kenya's Junior Starlets needed a dramatic late equaliser from Jael Simiyu to earn a 1-1 draw against hosts Tanzania and secure top spot in Group A of the CECAFA U-17 Girls Championship in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.
The result saw both sides finish the group stage unbeaten on seven points, but Kenya advanced as group winners thanks to a superior goal difference after their emphatic victories over Sudan and Somalia earlier in the tournament.
In a match billed as a showdown between the two strongest teams in the group, both sides approached the contest with attacking intent despite having already secured their places in the semi-finals.
Tanzania threatened early through Yasinta Kaluwa, who carved open space inside the Kenyan penalty area, but goalkeeper Mishel Okoyo was equal to the task and gathered comfortably.
Kenya gradually settled into the contest, with Tabitha Wambui causing problems down the left wing. The winger produced one of the visitors' first meaningful opportunities after beating her marker before sending a curling effort narrowly off target.
The hosts continued to look dangerous on the counterattack and almost broke the deadlock when Helena Mtundagi found herself through on goal following a slick passing move, only to send her effort wide of the target.
At the opposite end, Brenda Achieng remained Kenya's main attacking outlet. The tournament's leading scorer came close on several occasions and was later presented with a golden chance to put her side ahead after winning a penalty. However, Tanzanian goalkeeper Nusra Jafari guessed correctly and produced an excellent save to keep the scores level.
Having survived that scare, Tanzania struck six minutes before halftime. A swift counterattack caught Kenya exposed at the back, allowing Milembe Juma to release Bahati Kizanguzi, who calmly controlled the ball before slotting beyond Okoyo to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
The Junior Starlets emerged from the break determined to respond and thought they had found an equaliser shortly after halftime when Achieng bundled the ball home from close range. Their celebrations were short-lived, however, as the assistant referee raised the flag for offside.
Kenya continued to press forward in search of a leveller, with substitutes Elizabeth Alizeba and Lindey Wee Atieno adding fresh energy to the attack. Jafari was again called into action late in the contest, making another important stop to preserve Tanzania's lead.
But just when it appeared the hosts would claim victory, Kenya produced one final push. Deep into stoppage time, Jael Simiyu found the breakthrough the Junior Starlets had been searching for, firing home to rescue a crucial point and ensure Kenya finished at the summit of Group A.
The draw extended Kenya's unbeaten run in the competition and underlined the team's resilience after trailing for much of the match. Having scored 23 goals and conceded just once during the group stage, the Junior Starlets now head into the semi-finals full of confidence as they continue their quest for regional glory.
