Murkomen apologised to residents and condemned the conduct of the officers involved, saying security personnel are meant to protect citizens rather than victimise them.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has acknowledged that police officers acted unlawfully during a security operation in Ang’ata Barikoi, Narok County, where residents were allegedly beaten, property destroyed and traders robbed in the aftermath of heightened insecurity along the Migori–Narok border.
In a rare public admission during a security meeting in the area on Wednesday, Murkomen apologised to residents and condemned the conduct of the officers involved, saying security personnel are meant to protect citizens rather than victimise them.
"There are times when I defend our police officers when they are carrying out their duties, but there are also times when I criticise them when they make mistakes, as they did here in Ang’ata Barikoi," said Murkomen.
"As the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, I would like to apologise to all the residents of Ang’ata Barikoi who were harmed by the brutal actions of police officers who were supposed to protect citizens, not beat them, oppress them, and rob them of their property. I am therefore deeply sorry," he added.
The Cabinet Secretary said disciplinary action would be taken against officers found culpable, stressing that the government would not condone abuse of power by members of the security services.

Murkomen's remarks came days after a cattle rustling incident along the border of Narok and Migori counties in which a General Service Unit (GSU) officer was killed. The incident triggered a security operation in the region that residents say escalated into violence and destruction of property.
Local leaders led by Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu, Senator Ledama Ole Kina, Emurua Dikirr MP David Keter and Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli condemned the attacks on residents and called for accountability.
The leaders also urged the national government to address long-standing land disputes and recurring cattle rustling, which they said continue to fuel insecurity and tensions in the region.
