Under the new system, users are required to register on the official KNEC e-Certificate portal using an email address and complete a secure identity verification process.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has rolled out a new E-Certificate platform that allows former KCSE and KCPE candidates to access, download, and verify their examination certificates online.
The digital platform covers candidates who sat national examinations between 1989 and 2025, giving millions of former students a convenient way to retrieve lost certificates without physically visiting KNEC offices or their former schools.
Under the new system, users are required to register on the official KNEC e-Certificate portal using an email address and complete a secure identity verification process.
Applicants must provide personal details such as full name, National ID number, date of birth, and phone number.
The system then automatically validates the information through the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS), ensuring accurate matching of identity records before granting access.
Once verified, applicants enter their examination index number, select the exam type—KCSE or KCPE—and indicate the year they sat for the examination.
A certificate generation fee of about Sh1,200, plus VAT and eCitizen charges, is then paid through available digital payment options, including M-Pesa and bank cards.
After successful payment, the system generates a digitally signed PDF certificate embedded with a blockchain-based verification hash.
The document can be downloaded instantly and used for official purposes, with its authenticity easily verifiable by institutions.
The certificates remain available on the platform for six months, after which users may need to regenerate them.
KNEC has also introduced a dedicated verification portal for employers, universities, professional bodies, and government agencies.
Institutions can independently confirm the authenticity of certificates or conduct bulk verification of up to 1,000 records at a time, significantly reducing processing time.
The council says the innovation is designed to enhance efficiency, strengthen document security, and eliminate fraudulent academic credentials, marking a significant step toward a fully digital examination certification system in Kenya.
