The government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing affordable housing and infrastructure projects after Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei led a team of Principal Secretaries (PSs) on an inspection tour of key development sites in Kamukunji and other city sub-counties.
In Kamukunji Constituency, Koskei, accompanied by Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and several other PSs, visited the Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing Project, the City Cotton trunk sewer line, Nairobi River restoration works, non-motorised transport facilities, Kamukunji Recreation Park and the Starehe Affordable Housing Project to assess progress on government-funded programmes.
The inspection focused on projects the government says are designed to improve housing, sanitation, transport systems and public spaces while supporting economic activities and enhancing living conditions in urban centres.
Speaking during the visit, Koskei said the government would continue providing the resources required to ensure ongoing projects are completed without delays. He emphasised that completing existing projects remains a priority as the government works to implement its development agenda.
Koskei also said President William Ruto remains focused on ensuring development projects are delivered as planned to support the country’s long-term growth and transformation.
PS Hinga said the Affordable Housing Programme continues to expand nationwide, giving more Kenyans an opportunity to own homes while creating employment through construction and related sectors.
He encouraged eligible Kenyans to apply for available housing units through the Boma Yangu platform, saying the programme has reached many counties.
“The Affordable Housing Programme is progressing well, and housing units are now available across counties in Kenya. I encourage all eligible Kenyans to apply through the Boma Yangu platform and secure an opportunity to own a decent and affordable home. This programme is transforming lives while creating jobs and driving economic growth,” said PS Hinga.
The PS added that the government will continue accelerating delivery of affordable housing under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) while maintaining quality standards, affordability and transparency in the allocation of housing units.
Beyond housing, the inspection also covered supporting infrastructure projects including trunk sewer systems, river rehabilitation works, pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, sports grounds, parks and an amphitheatre at Kamukunji.
Government officials said the projects are being implemented together to improve public services and community facilities as part of an integrated urban development plan.
Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said progress has also been made under the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, particularly in upgrading sewer infrastructure serving Lucky Summer and Baba Dogo in Ruaraka Constituency.
According to PS Omollo, the project involves the construction of a 27‑kilometre trunk sewer network along the Nairobi River corridor to divert wastewater from the river and surrounding residential areas for treatment.
“With a treatment capacity of 60 million litres per day, the upgraded network will help curb pollution, improve sanitation and protect the Nairobi River ecosystem,” said Omollo.
He also said the Climate Works X Mtaani Initiative has created employment opportunities for more than 45,000 young people and women engaged in river cleaning, drainage maintenance and environmental restoration activities.
The PS said the initiative demonstrates how investment in public infrastructure can support environmental conservation while creating jobs for communities living around the project areas.
“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, through the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), has played a key coordination role in supporting project implementation and mobilising communities under the ClimateWorX Mtaani Initiative,” said PS Omollo.
The government said affordable housing projects are currently being implemented in counties across the country and urged more Kenyans to register for available housing units through the Boma Yangu platform.
The programme, implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, seeks to increase access to affordable housing, reduce the national housing deficit, create employment opportunities and support sustainable urban development under Vision 2030 and BETA.
