The operations, conducted under Operation Amani Boni (OAB), involved the recovery and safe destruction of four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed along Major Supply Routes (MSRs), which are used by both security forces and local communities in the area.

Four terrorist plots have been disrupted in Lamu County after the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops detected and neutralised hidden explosives during route clearance missions.
The operations, conducted under Operation Amani Boni (OAB), involved the recovery and safe destruction of four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed along Major Supply Routes (MSRs), which are used by both security forces and local communities in the area.
In a statement, KDF said the first incident happened during a dominance, route clearance and link-up patrol when the troops discovered a concealed pressure plate IED before it could be activated. The soldiers secured the area and carried out a controlled detonation, rendering the explosive harmless and preventing a possible attack.
Days later, troops conducting another routine route clearance and dominance patrol found three more concealed IEDs along MSRs in the Sarira area. The devices were located approximately 5.1 kilometres, 8.27 kilometres and 8.4 kilometres along the routes.
KDF said Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists responded and safely disposed of all three explosives, eliminating the threat without casualties or damage.
“The continued recovery of IEDs along supply routes shows that terrorist groups are still using hidden explosives as security operations increase pressure on their activities. The operations have also highlighted the role of intelligence-led patrols, proper route clearance procedures and the commitment of KDF personnel in preventing attacks,” reads the statement.
The Commander, Operation Amani Boni, confirmed that offensive and stabilisation operations remain ongoing across the area, with troops maintaining control of key areas, securing important transport routes and pursuing those responsible for planting the explosives.
“These sustained efforts continue to degrade terrorist capabilities while enhancing the safety and confidence of residents, businesses and travellers across the region,” reads the statement.
The detection and destruction of the IEDs marks another achievement for the Kenya Defence Forces in its efforts to counter terrorist threats in Lamu County.
Beyond protecting military personnel, the operations have helped safeguard civilian lives and maintain the security of key transport routes, supporting peace, stability and socio-economic activities in the region.
