Rare KNH surgery saves man after steel rods pierce through body, causing severe pelvic fracture

Young man recovering at Kenyatta National Hospital after doctors successfully removed two steel rods that pierced through his body in a rare high-risk surgery.

Medical teams at the Kenyatta National Hospital have successfully performed a rare and highly complex life-saving surgery on a young man who suffered serious injuries after being impaled by two steel rods in a construction site accident.
The patient sustained severe pelvic injuries after the metal rods pierced through his body from the back to the front, causing a pelvic fracture and extensive soft tissue damage in what doctors described as a critical and unusual trauma case.
Despite the severity of the injuries, major blood vessels and vital pelvic organs were narrowly spared, significantly improving his chances of survival.
Hospital officials said the emergency operation required rapid coordination and advanced surgical expertise from multiple specialist teams working under intense pressure.
The procedure involved stabilising the patient, managing the traumatic injuries, and safely removing the embedded steel rods.

The delicate surgery was led by Dr Victor Bargoria alongside an anaesthesia team headed by Dr Muchiri P.V. They were supported by a multidisciplinary team comprising trauma surgeons, orthopaedic specialists, nurses, and critical care experts.
"During the delicate procedure, surgeons successfully removed the steel rods while carefully managing the complex injuries associated with the trauma," said KNH.
The case required precise coordination due to the severity and location of the injuries, which affected the pelvic region and surrounding soft tissues.
Following the successful operation, the patient was stabilised and placed under close medical observation. He is currently in stable condition and continues to receive comprehensive care from the hospital’s multidisciplinary team as he recovers.
Hospital officials confirmed that the patient remains under monitoring as doctors assess his progress after the high-risk surgery.
"The patient is currently stable and recovering under close observation and comprehensive multidisciplinary care at the hospital," KNH said.
The young man’s survival has been described as a remarkable recovery from what could have been a fatal injury.
