KNBS: Nearly 6 in 10 Kenyans returned home after losing jobs abroad

KNBS data shows that nearly 60 per cent of Kenyans who returned from abroad did so after their jobs or employment contracts came to an end.

More than half of Kenyans who returned from abroad did so after their jobs or employment contracts came to an end.
According to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), 29,892 returnees — representing 59.2 per cent of the 50,465 recorded return migrants — cited the end of employment as their main reason for coming back home.
Other unspecified reasons accounted for 12,425 returnees, or 24.6 per cent of the total. Meanwhile, 3,827 people (7.6 per cent) returned to start businesses, while 2,485 (4.9 per cent) came back in search of farming land.
A smaller share returned to seek paid employment, accounting for 2.2 per cent of return migrants. Refugee and asylum-related cases made up 0.6 per cent of the total.
Job transfers, education and training, health concerns, and family-related reasons each accounted for less than one per cent of the return migration recorded by KNBS.
