Tunisia appoint Hervé Renard as Head Coach after heavy World Cup defeat to Sweden

The decision, announced by the Tunisia Football Federation, came after a difficult start to the campaign, as the Eagles of Carthage were beaten 5–1 by Sweden on Sunday at the Monterrey Stadium in Mexico.

Tunisia have replaced Head Coach Sabri Lamouchi with fellow Frenchman Hervé Renard following their opening-match loss at the ongoing FIFA 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The decision, announced by the Tunisia Football Federation, came after a difficult start to the campaign, as the Eagles of Carthage were beaten 5–1 by Sweden on Sunday at the Monterrey Stadium in Mexico. A double from Yasin Ayari, alongside goals from Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres and Mattias Savenberg, secured a dominant win for Sweden. However, Tunisia did manage to pull one back through Omar Rekik.
Following the result, Lamouchi left his role as head coach, and the Tunisian Football Federation quickly moved to appoint Renard as his replacement in an effort to steady the team.
“The Tunisian Football University announces the appointment of Hervé Renard as the coach of the national team until the end of the 2026 World Cup, to continue his duties starting this evening, with the same financial privileges,” the football body said on Facebook on Tuesday.
“The agreement is open to negotiations after the end of participation in the World Cup, for long-term cooperation based on specific sporting goals.”

Renard, 57, arrives with extensive experience in African and international football, having built a strong reputation across multiple national teams. He remains the only coach to have won the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries, first guiding Zambia to a historic title in 2012 before repeating the feat with Côte d'Ivoire in 2015.
Beyond his continental success, Renard has also managed Morocco and Saudi Arabia, adding further international exposure to his coaching résumé, including appearances at the FIFA World Cup. His most recent World Cup campaign came with Saudi Arabia at Qatar 2022, where his team produced one of the tournament’s biggest shocks by defeating eventual champions Argentina in the group stage.
Tunisia now turn their attention to the rest of Group F, where they are drawn alongside Sweden, the Netherlands and Japan. Their next fixture is scheduled against Japan on June 20, giving the new coach limited time to prepare the squad for a crucial response.
